Do I need a partner to join a class?
It would be beneficial to have a dance partner when you attend your class, However, you are welcome to join us with or without a partner. I will make every effort to provide a partner on the night, but this will depend on how many PDC helpers attend.
Do I need any special clothing or equipment?
Dance shoes would be ideal, but certainly not essential for the beginners classes. Comfortable everyday shoes will be ok, preferably with smooth soles, and definitely not training shoes if possible. Ladies can wear their usual height heels that they are used to wearing. It also a good idea to wear layers as you could get hot. It would be a good idea to bring a bottle of water.
Would the classes be suitable for an older person?
Generally yes, but this depends on the mobility, general health and agility of the person. if you are in doubt, please discuss this with your GP. Ballroom dancing is enjoyed by many people of pension age, some say it keeps them feeling young and well.
How many people are in the classes?
The class sizes vary immensely, but we never have more than 30 in a class, giving everyone the chance for individual attention by myself.
What will I learn in the class?
We start by learning the basic steps in the English Slow Waltz, moving on to learn Social Foxtrot, Cha Cha Cha and Jive. As the weeks progress, more rhythms will be added, but only when I feel the group is ready for them.
How long does the course last?
The dance classes are ongoing, and will continue to run as long as they are attended. In the first two weeks, you will know enough to move around the social dance floor in four rhythms, but there will many more rhythms introduced, along side technique, style and higher grade routines and eventually showpieces. The choice is yours as to how far you take it. Most people get hooked very quickly, and some, although having started out to only learn their wedding Waltz, go on to enjoy all the other rhythms.
What happens if I can't keep up with the rest of the class?
I always endeavour to teach at a pace that everybody can keep up with. However, if I see that anybody is slightly struggling, or have missed some classes, I may suggest some private tuition, so not to get behind.
